.NET Rocks

Recently there has been alot of talk about PodCasting. I guess I have to write something about it to.

It caught my attention just because of it's name. Having recently bought an iPod it seemed like something for me. Surfing around the web and reading about it one PodCast caught my attention. The .NET Rocks show by Franklins.Net. Mixing my iPod with my interest in .NET seemed like a killer combo!

A new "episode" of The .NET Rocks show is released each week and features different themes each time with many different guests. Usually the guests are more or less famous people in the field and not too seldom they are Microsoft employees.

Now I listen to .NET Rocks every day on my way to work. If you haven't tried PodCasting yet or are interested in .NET like me, try out the .NET Rocks show... you'll love it.

My thoughts on Firefox

I've been a fan of Microsoft and Internet Explorer for a long time but when I started at my new job as a C# developer, developing mainly webapplications, I was enlightened by a colleague.

Internet Explorer has many, many flaws. I've been aware of the security flaws for a long time but thought that as long as I ran windowsupdate on a regular basis nothing would happen, and I was right about that. But there was another aspect to it that I hadn't been paying much attention to i.e. standard-support.

As a developer you get very aware of these things when you first make a site according to the standards set up by w3c and then have to redo alot of it just to fit Microsoft's needs. If Microsoft would have followed the set standard there would be no problems.

A big issue in all of this is that alot of people use Internet Explorer only because it is the standard Internet browser installed with the Operating System. This cripples the further evolution of Internet as an information sharing system. Internet Explorer will never become better if it gets no competition.

Recently the Mozilla Foundation has launched www.spreadfirefox.com which is a site to promote Firefox as a better alternative to other Internet browsers. Since the 1.0 PR version of Firefox was released the stats have begun to change in Firefox favor compared to Internet Explorer. This is a good thing since it forces Microsoft to continue it's development of Internet Explorer to keep up.

Hopefully more and more people will realize that Internet Explorer isn't the best choice just because it comes with the Operating System. Click the Firefox button on your right and be a part of an Internet revolution!

Stuff I don't like about iPod

Recently I bought an iPod 40GB. I was very happy with it until I discovered some minor flaws which to me isn't so minor.
  • The iPod won't save all settings. Settings like repeat and shuffle are saved but some settings, like the clicker-wheel audio setting, are not.
  • The iPod firewire-cable is the only cable which fits the charger. I can't use my USB-cable for charging only. Since I want to connect the iPod to my PC using the dock and FW I have to buy a new cable to be able to charge only.
  • The iPod won't shut itself down if I leave it in the dock and turn off my computer. It have happened many times that I turn of my computer at night when I'm going to sleep and wake up finding my iPod all out of power. Really frustrating since I want to listen to music on my way to work!
Apple, wake up and fix these things! A simple firmware-update should be able to take care of at least two of the above mentioned problems.
